The Acer brand is famous for making tech gadgets with amazing value and price points so many of you won’t be surprised to know that the 10.1-inch Acer Iconia A3 tablet is currently one of the most affordable Android tablet in the market. You can currently buy one of these for less than $250. As you might have guessed from the price point, this tablet is an entry-level model but it does pack in some great features that give great value for your dollar spent.
The 10.1-inch Acer Iconia A3 weighs in at 20 ounces and measures 0.4-inch in thickness. It might not be the lightest nor slimmer tablet in the market but you definitely can’t label it by chunky by any standards. Its dimensions and weight is about the profile of the average 10-inch tablets in the market today. The back casing of the tablet is made from plastic with a matte finish and the silver trimming around the device sports a brushed-metal look. The 5MP camera is located on the top right corner of the device and the set of stereo speakers are located on the right and left edges of the tablet. The power button, volume rocker and connection ports are well located and are comfortable to use. Overall, the A3 tablet sports a safe and universal aesthetic that would appeal to many.
Specs and Features
To achieve the affordable price point with the Acer Iconia A3, some compromises has been made. One of them is evident in the screen resolution. The 10.1-inch display on the A3 has a 800 x 1280 resolution. This translates to about 149ppi in pixel density, which is not too high by today’s standards, which might irk more discerning users. It is nevertheless still an IPS HD screen and in reality, most consumers can’t tell the difference between 720p and 1080p screens anyway.
The tablet comes with 1.2Ghz MediaTek processor, 1GB of RAM and up 32GB of internal storage. These specs are a little modest but will prove to be more that sufficient for running basic functions on the tablet. The A3 runs on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. The user interface is close to the stock version of Android with Acer incorporating several of its own features onto the device. One of such features that we really like is the two-thumb and five-finger gesture feature that lets you instantly access an app/webpage/feature of your choice though finger gestures. When the device is locked, you can configure the tablet to launch the camera app (or any other features for that matter) by just placing five fingers on the locked screen.
Another feature that we really like on the 10-inch Acer Iconia A3 is the IntelliSpin feature that improves ‘rotation awareness’ on the tablet. One of the biggest problems on many tablet models is that the screen layout switches between portrait and landscape configurations with the slightest tilt. The IntelliSpin feature on the A3 tablet solves this irritating problem by increasing the sensitivity of the accelerometer where the screen configuration will only change when the tablet is completely on portrait or landscape mode.
Overall, the 10.1-inch Acer Iconia A3 tablet fares well as an entry-level tablet and would make an excellent tablet for anyone who is looking for a basic and affordable 10.1-inch model. It does not come with many industry leading features and specs but then again it is not meant to be. For the average tablet user, most of the cutting edge tablets in the market are overkill, with loads of features and computing power that he or she will barely use. The truth is a majority of tablet users use their tablets for basic tasks such as surfing the web, playing games and watching movies and this tablet performs all these functions competently. Once again, if you are looking for a well priced, entry-level 10-inch tablet, the Acer Iconia A3 is definitely worth your consideration.
