The 2013 13-inch Apple MacBook Pro (Retina Display): Faster & More Affordable

MacBook Pros have always been relatively expensive (like most of Apple’s products) compared to other mainstream laptops but this year, we see a decent price drop with the new 13-inch MacBook Pro Retina laptop.

Compared to the $1699 price tag on its predecessor, the new 13-inch model now cost $1299, with a whopping $400 price reduction. Notice on how we choose the words ‘more affordable’ in the title instead of cheap because $1299 is still a premium price tag in the laptop universe (you can get a decent mainstream laptop for around $800 or less). Nevertheless, no one is complaining about the $400 price drop especially when you are still getting faster and more powerful computing platform.

The price drop also closes the gap between the 13-inch MacBook Pro and the MacBook Air. The price difference between those two models have been reduce to a mere $200, making the decision making process that much harder amongst consumers. The MacBook Pro laptops have come a long way throughout the years in terms of dimensions and lightness whilst the MacBook air range of laptops have also make big leaps and bounds in terms of specs and performance.

Although the new 13-inch MacBook Pro weighs noticeably heavier than the MacBook Air, both the models are pretty close in terms of thickness. The Pro measures in at just 0.7-inches that is very close to the Air’s thickness at its thickest point. The Pro’s footprint is also very close to that of the Air.

The 13-inch Retina display on this new MacBook Pro has a 2560 x 1600 resolution. The laptop is powered by the 4th generation ‘Haswell’ Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, a 128GB flash hard drive for storage and an Intel Iris graphics processor. Then there is the 720p HD camera on the front that is great for video conferencing. The laptop comes with a large variety of connectivity options including two Thunderbolt digital video outputs. Apple has done away with the Ethernet port, probably to maintain its slim profile. The batteries can last up to 9 hours on one charge.

Overall, this new laptop would make an excellent buy for anyone who has the budget for it. It is easily one of the most powerful 13-inch laptops in the market, not to mention, also one of the better-looking ones too. Other than the significant price drop, the list of upgrades found on the new 13-inch MacBook Pro is pretty standard. We look forward to more groundbreaking new features in future MacBooks.
